VI Peel has developed 5 custom peels to choose from – the VI Peel for anti-aging and skin rejuvenation, the VI Precision Peel for anti-aging, sun damage and body treatments, the VI Precision Plus Peel for pigmentation, acne scarring, age spots and lightening, the VI Peel Purify Peel for acne, acne scarring and oily skin and the VI Peel Purify with Precision Plus for acne, acne scarring and lightening. Each VI Peel targets a specific skin care concern and all are great for all skin types. In fact, this medium depth chemical peel is particularly great for skin of color. Indeed, from its origin this company has maintained a special focus on patients with skin of color.
Why Choose a Peel?
There are a number of skin concerns that bring patients in for a chemical peel. For all skin types chemical peels are a solid solution for addressing:
Hyperpigmentation
Melasma
Acne
Acne Scarring
Keloids
Overproduction of Sebum/oily skin
New post-surgical scars
Can I Combine My Peel with Other Treatments?
For wow results, VI Peels are often alternated with radio frequency micro-needling. Micro-needling breaks pigment and the VI Peel lifts it. It is recommended patients wait at least 14 days after the peel before undergoing a micro-needling treatment. Fillers and Botox are also regularly combined with the VI Peel. Lip fillers can be done on the same day as clearing the skin around the lips will make them look fuller. Botox and fillers, also done on the same day, can address the deep lines and wrinkles, leaving the VI Peel to improve fine lines, tighten the skin and address texture and pigmentation.
Are you considered skin of color?
Skin of color is generally defined as non-Caucasian patients who have a Fitzpatrick of III-VI. The Fitzpatrick scale is based on hair color, eye color, skin tone, and your response to sun. Ethnicities largely included in this category are African, Pacific Islander, Asian, Middle Eastern, Hispanic, and East Indian. There are anatomical differences between darker and lighter skin. Thickness, oil levels and response and recovery to skin cell stripping differ between skin types. Skin of color can tend to be thicker, oilier and more resistant to stripping. Understanding the anatomy of the skin and your Fitzpatrick number is important to ensuring you are choosing the best treatment protocol. For example, a Hispanic patient prone to oily skin may choose the Purify with Precision Plus Peel. An African American patient prone to PIH (common sequela after acne) and PFB (inflammatory dermatosis) is best suited for the Precision Plus Peel. An Asian patient prone to hyperpigmentation would also be a candidate for the Precision Plus Peel.
What to expect on peel day?
You are gorgeous without product, so plan to arrive on appointment day with a clean face. While your peel is being applied you should expect a pain level between 2-3. After your peel is applied you will receive a post peel kit with instructions. It is key to use the post peel protectant and follow the post peel instructions, which include avoiding the sun and wearing sun protection, adequately hydrating and moisturizing and using a gentle purifying cleanser. You should expect the entire peel process to last up to 7 days with your heaviest peel days on day 4 and 5. Of course, the best thing you can do for your beautiful skin post-peel and beyond is to always wear sunscreen.
Wait – I Didn’t Peel!
Yes, this happens and it is not always a bad thing. VI Peels are medium depth, so not all skin will react in the same way. If you find your skin doesn’t peel post treatment it could be you are great at regularly exfoliating your skin (pat yourself on the back), so you don’t have a lot of skin cells to remove. You will still get the benefits of the peel as it will still tighten, smooth and regenerate your skin.
